2019/2020 National Budget: Abuse of education programs cuts assistance for students
THE abuse of government education programs has led the Ministry of Economy to reduce some of its assistance for school students.
While announcing the allocation of $800 million for the education sector, Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said there was a rising concern of abuse in the country’s schools.
He said the free milk program would only be given to students in rural areas after students were found to be misusing the product.
“You can give the students milk but you can’t force students to drink, and unfortunately many students have been using milk for both creative purposes.
“For example, we have seen this, they are playing ‘who can stomp on their milk box the hardest’ with the winner being whoever squirts the milk at a greater distance,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“It’s a shame because in some other parts of the country the availability of free milk actually has an immeasurable and positive impact on students.
“So from now onwards we will be restricting the free milk program for students in rural and maritime areas and we will keep a close eye on the outcomes.”
